Ta Delfinia @ Antikyra

The weather is getting better and better. So we made the first overnight trip this year.

Our first stop was at Antikyra. It is a small seaside town south of Distomo. I guess it is busy in summer, but it was still quiet when we visited.

Antikyra town itself is developed around a small port. According to a local, there is also a beach across the port.

We had a lunch here. There are about 4 fish restaurants along the seaside walk and we walked into the one looked most busy which called Ta Delfinia (The Dolphins). This is the view from our table.

Typical psarotaverna, nothing fancy on the menu. Here is bread and white wine.

Starters were tyrokafteri (cheese and green chili dip) and horta (boiled green leaves). Both good.

We would have ordered fried calamari usually, but it was rather expensive. So we went for other staff. The 1st main dish was grilled sardines. I think it was 6 or 6.50 Euro.

The guts were not cleaned and for this reason the fish had some bitterness. Not bad, just average. I don't think the fish was particularly fresh (or particularly well preserved).

Salted cod with garlic sauce was excellent instead.

Batter was crunchy and not oily, while the fish meat was firm and flaky.

The garlic sauce had too much bread to my taste, but again it was all right.

We, or rather Greek Husband, ordered also a portion of fried potatoes.

I don't remember how much was the bill. Should have been around 30 Euros. At the end they gave us semolina halvas with almond grits on house. At this point, we were incredibly full and I did not manage to eat all.

Not a destination restaurant, but once we are in Antikyra, we eat here with pleasure.

Stop at Arachova

The last extended weekend, we went to Delphi. We wanted to stay a night, but learning that on the Sunday, the archaeological sites were closed, decided to go for just one day drive on the Saturday. One our way to Delphi, stopped at Arachova.

Arachova

It was very nice day and Arachova was very busy with Greek tourists. I don't think they were there for ski; just a leisure drive like the one we were doing.

We took some photographes and bought traditional sweets, pasta called hilopites, and one formaella cheese. Formaella can be bought in supermarkets in Athens, but it is product of this area. When we went home, we ate it fried. It was sweet, milky and gooey; very nice. When we have chance to go back to Arahova, we would buy the same cheese from the same shop which was also a producer.

Then I wanted to have a coffee in a pastry shop, but Hubby - being a Greek - insisted that we should have coffee outdoor and that was why we ended up in a cafeteria in the central square.

A cappuccino being 4 Euro, it was as expensive as the cappuccino I drank on Apostolou Pavlou Avenue in Thissio (if you are not familiar with the geography in Athens, this is one of the high streets of cafeterias in central Athens).

And these croissants were served well after I finished drinking coffee.

Arachova was a charming place, but I would rather go when there were not so much people.

Arni Psito @ Agia Anna

We went to Ossios Loukas recently.

We thought to be able to find a taverna nearby, but couldn't. Se we went up to Agia Anna where we knew that there are tavernes.

After half an hour of drive we stopped at a place called Elikonio.

When we entered, we did not know it was a psistaria (restaurant specialised in grilled meat), but anyway we were expecting to eat meat and it wasn't a problem.

As it happens in restaurants in countryside, they did not have menu and a woman who looked to be the owner or owner's wife explained to us verbally what they had on the day.

Here are tzatziki, beetroots, and local feta cheese.

Beetroots were delicious with a hint of vinegar. The Boeotia is famous for feta cheese and it was why we ordered one; I guess it was good, but to be honest we are not knowledgeable about feta cheese.

Then fried potatoes for Hubby.

They were fresh, but did not have much taste. We discussed that maybe the potato they used was not right sort of potato. Fried potatoes are such a simple food, but it is not easy to prepare good fried potatoes. These were OK, but rather dissapointing as we were expecting better ones.

About the time we started to worry about our main dish, it arrived.

800 grammes of grilled lamb on bone.

This did not betray our expectations: very soft, juicy and fragrant.

When we order, we were told that 1 portion is 800 grammes and we ordered accordingly. As the meat was on bone, there wasn't actually 800 grammes of meat to eat, but it was still a big quantity of meat for 2 of us.

But it was a shame to leave such a nice meat uneaten and eventually we managed to finish.

The bill came to 30 Euros (incl. tip). Not the cheapest food, but as the meat was very good, we were happy to pay.

Would love to come back, if we have a chance.
